The time to end our dependence on fossil fuels is now!
With the UN’s COP Climate Conference approaching, we, the Coalition for Our Planet, demand COP29 attendees commit to immediately end our global dependence on fossil fuels and no longer delay action for years to come.
This year’s COP conference threatens to set us backwards on climate justice and action.
The UN choosing to host COP29 in Azerbaijan, a country that prioritizes fossil fuel expansion over climate action, suppresses civil society and, blocks environmental protests, compromises the very purpose of the summit and global action on climate change.
SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s oil company, has announced plans to expand fossil fuel production –– a direct violation of The Paris Agreement.
In fact, Azerbaijan appointed a former fossil fuel executive from SOCAR to be the President of COP29.
Azerbaijan has already banned independent journalists from attending and begun its crackdown on civil society and independent media.
As it stands, this year’s COP climate conference is shaping up to be the most restricted and oppressive in history.
Take action now to protect the principles of the world’s largest climate conference and stop the fossil fuel industry from greenwashing their plans to expand production.
This year’s UN Climate Conference, COP29, is organized in a fossil fuel producing country and resided over by a former fossil fuel executive.
Azerbaijan, this year’s host country, appointed a former executive at its state oil company SOCAR, to be the President of COP29.
This clear conflict of interest is made possible by allowing Azerbaijan’s authoritarian regime to host the world’s largest climate conference with zero impunity.
The UN must act now to replace this year’s President with a climate expert as the new President for the conference.
